Choose the Best Time of Year to Visit the Arctic

When planning your trip to the Arctic there are several factors to keep in mind that will make your experience memorable, depending on what sights and activities are important to you.

Pack ice is thickest in July and August, so if your hope is to see polar bears this timeframe will be your best opportunity. This is also the best time to see walrus, seals, reindeer, and arctic fox as well as white beluga, minke and bowhead whale. Cruise activities can include kayaking, polar diving, ski mountaineering, and snowshoeing, all dependent on weather conditions and pack ice. July is the warmest month in the Arctic, reaching temperatures of 50 degrees during the day, but will still be chilly at night. Pack layers!

Experience the Midnight Sun from mid-April to mid-August. During June and July you will enjoy 24 hours of daylight, and temperatures as warm as 50 degrees. In August you may see walrus and their babies, as well as calving glacier fronts and magnificent waterfalls as the warmer temperatures melt the ice.

Opposite the Midnight sun, from November through January the sun stays below the horizon, in an effect known as Polar Night. Be aware that the temperatures can get as low as -4 degrees Fahrenheit. March is the coldest month in Svalbard, one of the northernmost inhabited areas of the Arctic.

You are more likely to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) October through March, and Norway is one of the best locations for this experience. Scoresby Sund on Greenland is another location known for great views of the borealis, and many cruises combine Whale Watching and Northern Lights. Orca whales are often seen near Tromso, Norway in November and January, as well as humpback, minke and sperm whales.
